Vintage UCGC Opaline Glass Vase: Floral Butterfly Design, Gold Gilt Accent

This tall white Opaline Glass vase is cylindrical in shape, and measures 15.5 inches in height. Decorated on all sides with butterflies, blue and orange flowers, green and orange leaves, and brown branches. With a sturdy clear base, the vase is accented with double gold gilt banding on the top. This vase dates to the 1970s based on the maker's label on the bottom reads, "U C & G C, Made in Peru"

Made by UCGC also referred to as UCAGC (United China & Glass Company) which was based in New Orleans and New York producing/ distributing dinnerware and glassware including many Japanese china patterns during the early 1950’s. History: The UC & G Company dates back to 1850 when founded by Abe Mayer and originally called Mayer & Co. Most items were sold throughout the Southeast U.S. as well as Central and South America. In the 1930’s the company took on the official trademark of UCAGCO (UCGC is actually UC&GC,) and the company began expanding overseas. After WWII, the company’s agent in Japan (S.A. Stolaroff) signed the very first contract allowing imports from Japan. Stolaroff was a talented ceramic designer himself and worked alongside many Japanese potteries to help lead the company’s line of ceramics. In 1956, UCAGCO was sold to Sammons Enterprises. In 1962 Stolaroff, who had become the company’s president, retired. That same year the company was rebranded United China & Glass Co. of Sammons Enterprises.
