Antique Shantou Pewter Teapot: Chinese Eglomise Painted Glass

This rare four sided, antique teapot was made in Shantou, China. Shantou (formerly named Swatow) is an eastern coastal city of China known for making cast pewter teapots with hand painted glass panels. This teapot is estimated to have been made in the early 1900s.

Made of ornately detailed cast iron pewter, this footed teapot features three glass panels that are decorated with different scenic scenes. The two handles easily move up and down. The bottom is marked in Mandarin.

The glass panel scenes were created by a rare art form of hand painting called "eglomise." The process involves reverse painting on glass and then viewing the image by turning the glass over.
This painting process provides an illuminating effect, especially in contrast to the dark pewter.

Condition: The glass panels are in excellent condition. There are two small marks from wear on pewter. (Please see photo #4 and #10.) Feel free to message me if you have additional questions or would like more photos.

Measurements: 4.25 inches in length (with spout), 3.5 inches in length (without spout), 3.25 inches wide, 6.25 inches in height (without handle), 7.75 inches in height (with handle). Spout opening is 1.75 inches wide.
