Titled "The Thunderbird" this large 1993 collector's edition framed print by wildlife artist Harry Antis, depicting the elusive bird, the ruffed grouse, while in its autumn woodland habitat. This artist-signed piece is professionally framed in oak with double-beveled matting under glass. Also included in the framing are a commemorative Earth Day stamp and medallions, reflecting the environmental ethos of this special edition.
In his artist’s statement on the reverse, Antis reflects on his encounters with this bird, known scientifically as Bonasa umbellus and colloquially as “the thunderbird” for the startling sound of its sudden flight. He writes: “On countless occasions over the years, as I have walked through these autumn woodlands, these gallinaceous creatures have burst forth out of hiding from right beneath my feet.” The artwork captures this moment — a solitary ruffed grouse standing alert among fallen leaves and birch trunks in a vibrant northern forest.
Harry Antis is known for his realistic portrayals of North American wildlife. His work resonates with hunters, birders, and conservationists alike. This signed print is well-suited to rustic interiors, bird-themed decor, or as a thoughtful gift for a birdwatcher, upland game hunter, or nature enthusiast.
