1937 Wedgwood Duke University Plate: Red Mulberry Historic Building

These are first edition 1937 Duke University plates made by Wedgwood. These commemorative plates were part of a collector series. Each 10-1/2" plate is in the rare Wedgwood Red Mulberry Scenes pattern and has a central image featuring an historic Duke University building. The following plates are available:

Trinity College – Randolph County 1873 – 1892
Kilgo Dormitory 1928

These plates have the back stamp that they was made in 1937 by Wedgwood of Etruria & Barlaston. The backs of the plates also carry the name of each building along with the manufacturer's mark: "Duke University Plates 1937. Made in England with sole importers – Jones, McDuffee & Stratton Co. of Boston." For the history on these plates, please scroll down past measurements.

In 1937, planning for the 1938-1939 centennial celebration of Duke University was well underway. The Alumni Association contracted with the famed English firm Josiah Wedgwood & Sons to produce a set of commemorative china plates.

The first edition was three hundred sets of twelve plates bearing the signature of Duke University President William Preston Few on the back. Wedgwood & Sons produced a second unsigned edition. Today, the plates are retired.
