Set of 2 – Alfred Meakin Tsing Hai 10 inch Plates, Midcentury Chinoiserie Brown & White Ironstone

Rare vintage find! This set of 2 vintage ironstone dinner plates by Alfred Meakin are in the Tsing Hai pattern. Made in Staffordshire, England circa 1950–1965, these 10-inch plates feature a classic Chinoiserie design in brown and white Transferware. The Tsing Hai pattern depicts a classic oriental landscape which includes a pagoda-style home, trees, a sailing vessel, and mountains.

The backstamp reads: “Tsing Hai – Alfred Meakin – Staffordshire, England – A Hand Engraved Pattern Applied Under the Glaze – Detergent and Acid Resisting Colour”

This mark and phrasing confirm mid-20th-century production, and the plates are made from durable ironstone, a type of stoneware popular for its strength and suitability for everyday use. Alfred Meakin operated from 1875 to 1976. J. & G. Meakin became part of the Wedgwood Group in 1970. Production under the J. & G. Meakin name ceased in 2000. The firm’s Eagle Works was then used to produce pottery for the Johnson Brothers brand. Production ended in 2004. The plant was demolished in 2005.
