Vintage Moulin des Loups Jar: French Provincial Pottery with Shepherd

This vintage French faience jar with lid was made by Moulin des Loups in Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, France. Crafted in tin-glazed earthenware, this 9-inch tall jar features a hand painted pastoral central scene of a French Provincial man—possibly a shepherd—holding a crook and surrounded by stylized flowers and fluttering insects in yellow, green, and blue. The reverse side shows a butterfly in flight, while the rim is adorned with an embossed scroll pattern and a shapely finial on the lid.

Though unmarked, pieces in this pattern are known to have included a blue windmill backstamp, used by Moulin des Loups between 1896 and 1952. This decorative jar is a fine example of French faience with a Moustiers influence, and would suit collectors of antique French pottery or anyone curating a European country decor.
