This is a rare mid-century Wedgwood set honoring the United States Capital and surrounding landmarks. Dated to 1964 by the embossed stamp on the bottom of the plate, this vintage set is part of the Wedgwood "The Federal City" series, a tribute to Washington D.C.'s architectural heritage. Both bowl and plate are decorated in black Transferware on white porcelain.
Capital Building Bowl
The outside of the 8-inch bowl features a detailed panorama of the White House, Capitol Building, Supreme Court, and Lincoln Memorial with the Washington Monument. The inside of the bowl has the Great Seal of the United States with a decorative floral motives along the upper inside rim.
Capital Building Plate
This 10 3/8-inch plate displays a detailed image of the Capitol Building, and the American eagle at the top of the plate along with same floral motive found on the bowl on both sides of the rim.
On the back of the plate is information about the United State's Capital which reads, "The cornerstone was laid by President Washington September 18, 1793. In 1800 the first section was completed and 32 Senators and 106 Representatives moved from Philadelphia to occupy the new Capitol. British troops burned the building in 1814 and by 1819 the North and South wings were restored. The imposing cast iron dome, replacing an old wooden one, was completed during the Civil War as a symbol of the strength and unity of the Nation."
Both plate and bowl have the Wedgwood series name, "The Federal City" and numbered 2 of a set of 4. Each item has the Wedgwood maker's mark which includes Made in England, Engraved by Wedgwood Studios mark, and "Produced Exclusively for Charles Schwartz & Son Washington DC." Charles Schwartz & Son is the oldest jeweler in Washington D.C. Founded in 1888, it was based in the nation’s capital for over 100 years, and has serviced the dignitaries of Washington and the world.
